Trager What is it? The Trager approach is a gentle method of movement education and integration of the body and mind. Dr. Milton Trager developed this approach after 50 years of experience with the body as a therapist and a doctor. The Trager Approach has two forms. The forms are “ Tablework” experienced passively and “ Mentastics” involving active participation. The movements work to release unproductive physical and mental patterns. These may be due to physical or emotional traumas such as accidents, disease, or stress. Trager encourages deeper relaxation, increased range of motion, and clear mental focus. What can I expect? In both forms, the purpose is to release long standing patterns that have developed. Sessions last 60-90 minutes. Table work sessions are done on massage tables. Underclothing or swimwear are worn (no oils or lotions are used). The client’s body is moved in ways that she naturally would move. The touch is performed such that you feel like you are moving effortlessly and as if on your own. Gently flowing, movements are not forced. In Metastics, you are educated in the same effortless movement quality while you do simple movements. These can be done throughout your day. Routine Mentastics usually becomes a part of self-care for tension relief. Trager Approach effects are cumulative so a series of sessions is recommended. What are the reported benefits? Clients report more freedom of movement, deep relaxation, and muscle repair. Trager has been known to help with the effects of stress, aches and pains, especially headaches and back pain, multiple sclerosis, injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, trauma release, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, depression and more. How much does it cost? Sessions usually cost $60 to $150 or more depending upon the experience of the therapist and location. What kind of training is required? The Trager Institute offers certification. Practitioners may have completed any number of levels taught as six day courses. These are Level 1-3 in Tablework , Level 1 Menastics, and 24 hours of practice and Anatomy. Thirty practice hours are required at each level.
