Tai Chi What is it? Tai Chi was created in about 1000 A.D. from a combination of Chi Kung (practiced for spiritual growth and good health) and self defense techniques for monks against thieves. T’ai Chi Ch’uan became a healing martial art form with a meditative focus. Tai Chi is primarily an internal practice in which the physical movement emphasizes the mental and energetic levels. As with all martial arts, the main focus is on being centered by strengthening your concentration. (Chinese medicine sites mental strength as the source of all excellence including good health.) The healing aspects come from balancing your attention evenly throughout your whole body. Tai Chi emphasizes internal strength through relaxation, balance, harmony and mind/body integration. Tai Chi has been used for last 300 hundred years as therapeutic exercise. Although Tai Chi is for everyone, it’s gentle movements have made it popular among millions of Chinese elderly. What can I expect? Tai Chi can be taught individually but is usually taught in small groups or classes. Expect to practice slow, circular movements with an emphasis on relaxation. Elements of breath control, mental concentration and energy flow through the body will be practiced in combination with the physical movements. What are the reported benefits? Tai Chi is known to reduce stress, improve balance and athletic performance, reduce signs of aging, lower blood pressure, improve arthritis and rheumatism conditions, lower weight and more. Research studies have concluded that Tai Chi helps to: Delay decline of cardio-respiratory function in older people, prevent falls and fractures in older people, aerobically condition, increase flexibility and strength, decreases body fat percentages How much does it cost? Tai Chi classes are often free! You can find free classes often held outdoors through recreation centers, health care organizations, and senior centers. Martial arts schools and exercise/dance centers charge between $10 per class to $100 or more for monthly fees. This covers weekly to unlimited classes each month. Many books and videos have become available to learn Tai Chi, as well. What kind of training is required? Tai Chi teachers come from a wide range of experience from novice to expert. Ask your instructor about coursework and experience. Most Tai Chi instructor’s schools require participants to have two years of Tai Chi experience to participate in classes.
