Chiropractic

What is it?

Chiropractic has its origins dating back to the late 1800’s. D.D. Palmer helped a man restore his hearing by placing the vertebrae in his upper back into proper alignment. Chiropractic places its emphasis primarily on the spine and improving alignment and mobility of the spine. It is a health care based system where the focus is on prevention and optimum functioning of the body.

What does it do?

Chiropractic uses a variety of techniques, the most popular being called an adjustment. This adjustment helps to correct what chiropractors call a subluxation (or mal-positioned vertebrae).

What can I expect?

Chiropractors vary greatly with how much time they spend with you during a session. Some only spend a few minutes, as they focus on the adjustment part of chiropractic. Others spend considerably more time, helping to release musculoskeletal problems as well as joint problems.

Chiropractors who use adjustments make a precise quick adjustment to a segment of the vertebral column. Often times, there is a popping sound as a result of the adjustment, which is usually painless. There are also chiropractors who gently nudge the vertebrae and this type of adjustment is called non-force.

What are the reported benefits?

Chiropractors treat a wide variety of health problems. Most notably, headaches, neck and low back pain, sciatica, scoliosis, arthritis, joint problems, ear infections, chronic pain. There are some well known studies that show chiropractor is the treatment of choice for low back pain.

How much does it cost?

Chiropractic again varies depending on location and on chiropractor. Some chiropractors accept insurance and others are cash only. Depending on the visit and whether or not x-rays are taken, the initial visit can run anywhere from $50 to $200. Subsequent visits can cost roughly anywhere from $25 to $50. Some chiropractors want you to return frequently and others only when you feel like it. So check around.

What kind of training does my chiropractor have?

Chiropractors are actually considered to be licensed physicians under Medicare. So they are doctors of chiropractic (D.C.). They attend undergraduate school (3 years minimum) and then chiropractic school, which is 3 ½ years of full time of study. They are then, after passing board exams, accredited by the Chiropractic board for your state.
